Somewhere between seeing your raw IQ score and actually understanding what it means, there's a number that does most of the real explanatory work — and it isn't the score itself. It's the percentile. A score of 120 tells you very little on its own. "Higher than 91% of people" tells you a great deal, instantly, without needing any statistical background at all.
And yet percentile is also one of the most commonly misread numbers on an entire results page — mixed up constantly with something it isn't: percentage of questions answered correctly.

What Percentile Actually Represents
Percentile is a ranking. Specifically, it tells you the percentage of the reference population that scored at or below your result. Because IQ scores follow a bell-shaped (normal) distribution centered on 100, every standard score maps onto a predictable percentile:

Why the Gaps Get Bigger the Further You Move From Average
Here's a detail that trips people up: the same 10-point jump in score represents a very different percentile jump depending on where you start. Near the average, 10 points moves you a lot. Near the extreme, 10 points barely moves you at all.

The same 10-point score gap represents a shrinking percentile jump the further you move from the average — a direct consequence of the bell curve's shape.
This is simply the shape of a normal distribution. Most people cluster tightly around the average, so small score differences near 100 separate a lot of people. Far from the average, very few people are there at all, so it takes a much bigger score gap to meaningfully change your percentile standing.
Percentile Thresholds You'll Actually Encounter
A handful of specific percentile cutoffs come up repeatedly in real-world contexts — worth knowing if you've ever wondered where certain thresholds like "gifted" or "Mensa-eligible" actually sit on the curve:

Percentile Depends Entirely on the Reference Group
One more nuance worth understanding: a percentile is only ever meaningful relative to a specific comparison group. The 91st percentile against the general adult population is a very different achievement than the 91st percentile within a pool of engineering PhD candidates — the second group is already a highly selected, higher-scoring population to begin with.
This is why it matters which reference population a test uses for its norms, and why comparing percentiles across different testing platforms should be done cautiously — "91st percentile" on two different tests isn't guaranteed to represent the same underlying ability level unless both are normed against comparable populations.

Does a higher percentile always mean a harder test was passed?
No — percentile reflects standing relative to other test-takers, not raw test difficulty. Two different tests of different difficulty can each produce a legitimate 91st percentile result for their own reference populations.
What percentile is considered average?
The 50th percentile is exactly average by definition — scores from roughly the 25th to 75th percentile (IQ 90–110) are generally described as the broad average range.
Can percentile be exactly 100th or 0th?
Practically, no — percentiles are typically capped just below 100 (like 99.9th) and just above 0 (like 0.1st) because a finite reference sample can never represent an absolute mathematical extreme.
Why do two people with the same IQ score sometimes see different percentiles?
