You finish the test, the loading spinner runs for a second, and then a number appears. Maybe it's 118. Maybe it's 97. And your first reaction is almost always the same: okay, but what does that actually mean? Is it good? Bad? Should you be relieved or a little disappointed? The number by itself answers almost none of that — you need the context around it.

Notice how the jumps aren't linear. Moving from 100 to 115 takes you from the 50th to the 84th percentile — a big leap. But moving from 130 to 145 only takes you from roughly the 98th to the 99.9th percentile. That's the nature of a bell curve: scores get rarer, and each additional point gets "harder" to earn, the further you move from the center.

Why Your Score Can Shift Between Attempts
If you've ever taken two different cognitive tests and gotten noticeably different results, you haven't necessarily gotten smarter or dumber — a handful of very ordinary factors can shift a score by five to ten points in either direction:
Sleep and fatigue
Processing speed and working memory are especially sensitive to how rested you are.
Practice effects
Retaking a similar test shortly after the first attempt often inflates scores simply from familiarity with the format.

They're two views of the same information — the raw score and percentile always move together on a given scale. Percentile is usually just the more intuitive way to grasp how rare a score is.
Why did my score change when I retook the test?
Small fluctuations of a few points are completely normal and expected — they reflect sleep, familiarity with the format, stress, and general day-to-day variability, not a real change in ability.
What's considered a 'good' IQ score?
Anything from 90 to 110 covers roughly the middle half of the population and is squarely average. There's no single 'good' cutoff — it depends entirely on what you're comparing it to and why you're asking.
Should I be worried if one of my subscores is much lower than the others?
