Processing speed (Gs) is defined as the ability to automatically and fluently perform simple, repetitive cognitive tasks — especially when under pressure to maintain focused attention. The key word is "simple" — Gs is specifically about the speed of basic mental operations, not complex reasoning.
Think of Gs as the clock speed of your cognitive processor. Just as a faster CPU doesn't automatically mean a smarter computer, a faster Gs doesn't determine your overall intelligence — but it does set a ceiling on how efficiently your other abilities can operate.

Why Processing Speed Matters for Overall IQ
Processing speed plays an important role in overall cognitive performance — not because it IS intelligence, but because it enables other cognitive abilities to function efficiently. Here's how Gs correlates with other key abilities:

The mechanism is primarily through working memory. When basic operations are slow, they consume more working memory capacity — leaving less for complex reasoning. Someone with low Gs may use most of their working memory just keeping up with the pace of information, while someone with high Gs processes the same input automatically and uses their working memory for deeper analysis.

Of all the broad cognitive abilities in CHC theory, processing speed is the most sensitive to aging. It peaks earliest (late teens to early 20s) and declines most steeply and consistently across the lifespan.

This steep age-related decline in Gs is one reason why older adults — even those with high crystallized intelligence and extensive expertise — can feel slower or less sharp in fast-paced environments. Their knowledge and reasoning are intact; it's the speed of execution that has changed.

Low processing speed — even in the context of average or above-average intelligence — is associated with several learning and attention difficulties:
Dyslexia
Slow phonological processing speed makes word decoding laborious and effortful — reducing reading fluency even after phonics instruction
ADHD
Processing speed deficits are common in ADHD, independent of attention symptoms. Slow Gs can compound attention difficulties and reduce academic efficiency
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
Gs is often the first and most severely affected ability after brain injury, making it a key outcome measure in neuropsychological rehabilitation
Depression
Psychomotor slowing — a reduction in both physical and cognitive speed — is a core symptom of major depression, directly reflecting Gs reduction
Can You Improve Your Processing Speed?
Processing speed has a strong genetic component and is deeply tied to neural efficiency — the speed of signal transmission between neurons. This makes it harder to improve dramatically than crystallized intelligence. However, meaningful gains are possible through the right interventions:
Aerobic Exercise
Consistent aerobic activity (running, cycling, swimming) improves neural efficiency and reduces reaction time. Studies show 20–40 minutes of cardio 3× per week produces measurable Gs gains within 6–8 weeks.
Quality Sleep
Processing speed is acutely sensitive to sleep deprivation. Even mild sleep restriction (6 hours/night for 2 weeks) produces Gs deficits equivalent to two full nights without sleep.
Reduce Cognitive Load
Automating routine tasks through practice frees up processing resources. The more fluent you become at basic operations (reading, arithmetic), the faster your overall cognitive throughput.
Reaction Time Training
Specific reaction time training (used in sports, military, gaming) can improve simple RT. Transfer to other domains is limited but within-domain improvements are consistent.
Video Games (Action)
Action video games have been shown to improve perceptual speed and temporal resolution. Effects are genuine but modest, and mostly specific to visual processing speed.
Caffeine
Caffeine reliably improves simple reaction time and perceptual speed in the short term — but effects last only 3–5 hours and tolerance develops quickly. Not a long-term solution.
