Average IQ by Country: 2026 Global Data

Explore average IQ scores by country, what drives the differences between nations, and why the data is more nuanced than most lists suggest.

TEST.IQ Research

Let's be honest: few topics in intelligence research generate as much curiosity — and controversy — as average IQ by country.

The data exists. It's been collected and analyzed by researchers for decades. And yes, the differences between nations are real and measurable. But here's the thing: understanding what those differences actually mean requires a lot more nuance than most online lists provide.

This article gives you the most reliable data available, explains what really drives cross-country differences, and — most importantly — makes clear what the numbers don't tell us.

The Data: Average IQ by Country

The most widely cited research comes from Richard Lynn and Tatu Vanhanen, who compiled IQ estimates from over 80 countries using locally administered cognitive tests. More recent work by David Becker and others has expanded and refined these estimates. Here are the countries that consistently come out on top:

Important caveat about this data

These figures are estimated population averages — not official government measurements. They come from different tests, different age groups, and different time periods. Cross-country comparison is inherently imprecise. Use these numbers as rough indicators, not precise measurements.

Regional Overview

At a regional level, the pattern is consistent across all major studies: East Asian countries cluster at the top, followed by Northern and Western Europe, then North America and Oceania. Sub-Saharan Africa and parts of the Middle East show significantly lower averages.

Why Do Countries Differ? The Real Drivers

The measured differences between countries are large — sometimes 30+ points. Understanding what causes them is essential to interpreting the data correctly. The research points to several powerful environmental factors:

Education quality & access

Very High

Duration of schooling correlates strongly with measured IQ at the national level

Nutrition (iodine, protein)

Very High

Iodine deficiency alone can reduce average IQ by 10-15 points in a population

Healthcare & disease burden

High

Parasitic infections and early childhood illness significantly impact cognitive development

Economic development (GDP)

High

Wealth enables investment in education, nutrition, and healthcare

Test standardization differences

Moderate

Different tests, norms, and translation quality affect cross-country comparisons

Genetics

Debated

Heavily politicized; most researchers conclude environmental factors explain the vast majority of variance

The iodine example is striking

Studies of populations where iodine supplementation was introduced show IQ gains of 10-15 points within a single generation — demonstrating just how powerfully nutrition shapes measured intelligence. This is a fully reversible, environmental effect, with nothing to do with genetics.

The Flynn Effect — IQ Scores Are Not Fixed

One of the most important findings in intelligence research is the Flynn Effect — the consistent rise in average IQ scores throughout the 20th century in every developed nation studied. Scores rose approximately 3 points per decade for much of the 1900s.

Think about what that means. The genes of these populations didn't change. But nutrition, education, healthcare, and cognitive stimulation improved dramatically — and IQ scores rose accordingly. That's environmental change in action.

IQ scores rose ~3 points per decade throughout the 20th century (Flynn Effect). Some countries now show a "reverse Flynn Effect" — slight declines since 2000s.

Interestingly, some Nordic countries now show a slight reverse Flynn Effect — scores have plateaued or slightly declined since the 2000s. Researchers attribute this to changes in education systems, screen time, and reduced emphasis on abstract reasoning in schooling.

What This Data Does NOT Mean

Country-level IQ averages are frequently misused to make genetic or racial arguments. The research does not support this interpretation — and it's important to be explicit about why:

❌ Myth: "High-scoring countries are genetically superior"

Reality: The Flynn Effect proves that IQ responds dramatically to environmental change within a single generation — far too fast for genetic explanations.

❌ Myth: "Low-scoring countries cannot improve"

Reality: Countries that have invested in nutrition, education, and healthcare have shown rapid IQ gains. South Korea rose from 80s averages in the mid-20th century to over 100 today.

❌ Myth: "Country average = individual potential"

Reality: The variation within any country dwarfs the variation between countries. There are highly intelligent people in every country, and the average says nothing about any individual.

⚠️ Myth: "These numbers are perfectly accurate"

Reality: Data quality, sample sizes, test types, and norms vary enormously. Some country estimates are based on very small samples and should be treated with significant skepticism.

East Asia's Consistent Lead — What Explains It?

Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, and South Korea consistently rank at the top of global IQ studies. Several factors appear to contribute — none of them genetic:

📚

Intensive educational culture

East Asian education systems emphasize rigorous mathematics and problem-solving from an early age — exactly the skills most IQ tests measure.

⏱️

Long school hours

Students in Japan and South Korea spend significantly more hours in formal education than their Western counterparts.

🥗

Strong nutrition programs

These countries implemented comprehensive nutrition and public health programs that directly support cognitive development.

🏆

Cultural value of academic achievement

Strong cultural emphasis on academic performance motivates more effort on cognitively demanding tasks — including tests.

The Bottom Line

Average IQ by country is a real, measurable phenomenon — but it's a product of environment, policy, and history, not destiny. The countries that score highest today have invested heavily in education, nutrition, and public health. Countries that make those same investments see their scores rise within a generation.

And most importantly: national averages say nothing about individual potential. Cognitive ability is distributed across every country on Earth. Your IQ is shaped by your unique biology and experience — not by where you were born.
