One question I hear all the time: "What's a normal IQ for my age?" The answer isn't as simple as you might think — but here's the key thing to understand.

IQ scores are always relative to your age group. A 10-year-old and a 40-year-old both score 100 when they perform at the average for their respective peers — even though their raw cognitive abilities are very different. That's how the test is designed.

This guide walks you through what "average" looks like at every stage of life, how different cognitive abilities change with age, and what factors can speed up or slow down that change. It's all backed by decades of research in developmental and cognitive psychology.

The Key Rule: IQ Is Always Age-Normed

Before we get into any data, let's make this crystal clear: a score of 100 always means average for your age group — not the general population.

This is why you can compare a 12-year-old's IQ score to a 35-year-old's. Both 100s mean they're performing at the average for their peers — even though the 35-year-old's brain is far more developed in absolute terms.

Why age-norming matters

Without age-norming, IQ would be meaningless across the lifespan. A 7-year-old getting 50 questions right might be exceptional for their age, while an adult getting the same would be below average. Age-norming converts raw performance into a comparable scale across all ages.

Four Phases of Cognitive Development

Instead of thinking of cognitive aging as a simple decline, it's more helpful to see it as a series of distinct phases — each with its own strengths and challenges:

The brain is highly plastic — new neural connections form rapidly. Both Gf and Gc grow quickly. This is when education has the highest return on investment for cognitive development.

The Two-Curve Problem: Fluid vs Crystallized with Age

This is the most important nuance to understand. Fluid and crystallized intelligence follow very different trajectories as we age:

Fluid Intelligence (Gf)

Peaks in your mid-20s and declines gradually after that. It's most affected by age-related changes in processing speedand working memory capacity.

Crystallized Intelligence (Gc)

The Harvard Study finding

A landmark study from Harvard (Hartshorne & Germine, 2015) found that different cognitive abilities peak at dramatically different ages. Emotional intelligence peaked in the 40s–50s. Vocabulary peaked as late as the late 60s. Raw processing speedpeaked in the late teens. Intelligence isn't one thing that simply rises and falls — it's a collection of abilities with very different trajectories.

The trajectory I've described represents average trends — but individual variation is enormous. These factors can meaningfully accelerate or slow cognitive change at any age:

One of the most important concepts in cognitive aging research is cognitive reserve — the brain's ability to resist age-related changes or damage. People with higher cognitive reserve show fewer symptoms of cognitive decline even when their brains show similar physical changes to those with lower reserve.

So how do you build cognitive reserve? Here's what the research says:

  • Higher levels of education and intellectual engagement throughout life
  • Complex, stimulating occupational demands
  • Rich social networks and consistent social activity
  • Lifelong learning — languages, instruments, new skills
  • Regular physical exercise, particularly aerobic activity
  • Mental health maintenance — managing depression and anxiety

Use it or lose it — but the right kind of use

Simply doing more of what you already do well doesn't build cognitive reserve. The evidence supports novelty and challenge — learning genuinely new skills, engaging with unfamiliar ideas, and tackling problems outside your comfort zone. That's what really counts.

Children and IQ: What's Normal for My Child?

If you're a parent, understanding IQ development in children requires extra care. Here are a few things worth knowing:

Scores before age 8–10 can shift significantly as the brain develops. A score at age 6 is less predictive of adult IQ than a score at age 12.
