What Is CHC Theory?

CHC theory is a hierarchical model of human cognitive abilities that organizes intelligence into three levels — or strata — from the most specific to the most general. It represents a synthesis of two major research traditions:

Cattell-Horn Theory (Gc-Gf)

Developed by Raymond Cattell (1963) and extended by John Horn. Proposed that intelligence isn't one thing but a collection of broad abilities — most famously fluid (Gf) and crystallized (Gc) intelligence.

Rejected the idea of a single general intelligence factor (g).

Carroll's Three-Stratum Theory (1993)

John Carroll analyzed 461 datasets from decades of intelligence research and identified a clear hierarchical structure: general intelligence (g) at the top, broad abilities in the middle, and narrow abilities at the base.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, researchers Kevin McGrew and Dawn Flanagan merged these two frameworks into what's now known as CHC theory — combining the best of both traditions into a unified, empirically validated model that now guides the development of virtually every major intelligence test in the world.

CHC is the foundation of modern IQ testing

The WAIS-IV (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale), WJ-IV (Woodcock-Johnson), KABC-II, and many other leading intelligence tests are explicitly designed around CHC theory. When you take a properly designed IQ test today, you're engaging with CHC whether you know it or not.

CHC theory organizes cognitive abilities into three hierarchical levels — each more specific than the one above it:

Broad Abilities (8–16 factors)

Stratum II

Distinct clusters of related cognitive abilities. Each broad ability is relatively independent and can be measured separately.

Narrow Abilities (70+ factors)

Stratum I

Highly specific cognitive skills within each broad ability. These are what individual test items actually measure.

This hierarchical structure matters. Your IQ score (which reflects Stratum III — general intelligence) is an average that can hide important differences between your broad abilities. You might have exceptional fluid intelligence but below-average processing speed — and a single number can't capture that.

Why CHC won

CHC theory became dominant not because of politics or fashion, but because it has the strongest empirical support. Carroll's 1993 analysis of 461 datasets — spanning decades and thousands of participants — provided the most rigorous validation of any intelligence framework ever conducted. The structure he found matches what CHC theory predicts.
