Why Working Memory Matters More Than People Realize

Working memory rarely gets the spotlight the way "IQ" or fluid reasoning does, but it's arguably more directly involved in daily cognitive life than any other single ability:

This is genuinely contested territory in psychology, so it's worth being precise rather than promising more than the evidence supports.

The transfer problem

Training on a specific task like dual n-back reliably makes you better at that specific task. Whether that improvement meaningfully transfers to broader real-world working memory demands — reading comprehension, reasoning, general fluid intelligence — is genuinely debated in the research literature, with studies on both sides. What does have more consistent support is addressing the factors that suppress working memory performance in the first place — sleep deprivation, chronic stress, and multitasking all measurably reduce working memory capacity, and improving those tends to show up as real, practical gains rather than narrow task-specific ones.
